a5c7b9f00b Taking place 70 years after the events of "Avatar: The Last Airbender," this story follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang - a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenage girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air. Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern "Avatar" world, Republic City - a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology. It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive. However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crimewella growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart. Under the tutelage of Aang's son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large. Set 70 years after the events of "Airbender", Korra moves to Republic City to master her final element - air. With the guidance of the previous avatar Aang's son Tenzin, she has to fight crime and face a growing anti-bending movement that threatens to rip the metropolis apart. WARNING: contains spoilers for both this show and the prequel.

So far, I am only through with the third season, but I can safely say this sequel is far less attractivethe original, The Last Airbender. Perhaps some votes are influenced by the love of the first show, but, in my view it definitely doesn't deserve it's current score of 8.6.

For starters, Korra is just NOT a likable character. In fact, none of the characters are likable (well, perhaps except Tenzin's oldest daughter). Ever since season one, Korra behaved like an arrogant brat who thinks that she deserves attention just because she's the avatar. Despite having many "mentors", in many situations, she made things worse than they are. This is particularly exemplified by the story arc of season 2. In comparison, Aang never had much to begin with in the original show – he had the weight of an entire kingdom on his shoulder, plus the responsibilityan Avatar. There was not a moment when I was not rooting for Aang, but in the Legend of Korra, I actually felt the world would have been a better place without Korra. There was a huge lack of character developmentwe don't know a thing about each member of Team Avatar's history yet in season three. Baolin and his brother are not likable eitherthey are more clowns than actually offering any concrete help. If you noticed there are twicemany main characters in this show vs the last air-bender, which is really NOT a good idea.

Secondly, the plot was everywhere – each character seemed to be doing their own thing, particularly Tenzin, who appears more like a babysitter for Korra than a true mentor. In season three, it was even worsehe served absolutely no purpose except being beating up. Each season got its own story arc and villain which could be interesting if done right, but it was not. Because the show tried to "develop" too many characters at the same time, it ended up burying the main plot. The last air-bender had a clear plot and purpose and by the end of each season, I couldn't wait for the next. I don't feel the same way for this show.

Lastly, the antagonists are a joke, at least through season 3. The Dark Avatar of the 2nd season could have been a great success but ultimately ruined by the creator's desire to move on to something else. It is rather strange to me that somehow someone close to the antagonist was always able to make the right choice at the VERY LAST MINUTE to save the day – it's absurd. In comparison, Prince Zuko's inner conflict in the prequel was a prolonged struggle. It was much more real and after many right and wrong choices that ultimately led to his final decision to do the right thing. We don't see any of this in the Legend of Korra.

Some final thoughts: watch the show if you are a die-hard fan of the series. However, don't have high expectation for this sequel. The Last Airbender truly felt like a perfect marriage between Japanese style Anime (serious) and American Cartoon (relaxed). On the contrary, The Legend of Korra feels like I am watching a badly done American teenager soap opera. This is the stuff of LEGENDS, truly! Where to start? Korra is a great protagonist and goes through much character development just by Book 1. She is strong, smart and hot-headed. She is a unique Avatar because of her Airbending block, and the way she pulls through in the Season Finale is one of the Highlights of the Whole Series! Asami has MUCH potential and is a great member of the new Team Avatar. I just hope they develop her more along with Mako & Bolin in Book 2.

Amon and Tarrlok are some of the greatest Villains EVER and that is solidified by the 'boat' scene in the Season Finale. Overall, Incredible Series and I can't wait for Book 2: Spirits!
